The Nepean Songsters

ABOUT US

In 1988 the Nepean Seniors Recreation Centre was established within the Nepean Sportsplex. In 1993 the Nepean Songsters began and 17 years later is still a thriving and dynamic activity of the Seniors Centre. See HISTORY for details on its chronology and who started the choir.

Every Thursday morning, September through May, the Heritage Room is buzzing with chatter, laughter and singing from 9 AM to 11 AM.  The choir has a membership of 70 although attendance varies when snowbirds go south or some head to cottage country in early spring. This is a choir of both male and female voices, some music we sing in parts and others in unison. Many of our members have sung in other choirs during their lifetime, some as soloists. We all love to sing!!  We all know its good exercise!  We share a lot of laughs! We enjoy warm friendships.

Nellie Gervais books us with senior’s residences, nursing homes, City of Ottawa events and in our own Senior Centre. At the residences and nursing homes we enjoy the camaraderie and interaction with the audience during our Sing-Outs. They are encouraged to join in and it is a real songfest! Generally we receive a small honorarium which goes to the Volunteer Management Board of the Senior Centre. Check out PERFORMANCES to see where we performed last year.

Our musical director, Saundra Vandenberg has been with us for over 3 years; Barbara Creech, our accompanist, for 12 years. See LEADERS for bios of both these accomplished musicians.

Our repertoire is a “mixed bag” including English music hall, Broadway, pops, folk, spirituals, jazz, Canadian selections and rock and roll.  Our last concert on Sunday, October 23rd, 2011, was entitled: All Nature Sings. We were in the Centrepointe Studio at Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe Drive, Nepean. We promise a wide variety of music that will have your toes tapping! Tickets are available in September from members of the Songsters and at the Nepean Seniors Recreation Centre in the Nepean Sportsplex, 1701 Woodroffe Ave. See All Nature Sings , under PERFORMANCES for the list of songs we sang at our last concert.

You are invited to come in and join us on a Thursday morning until the end of May when our current season ends.
